Art Class Project : Regret (draft)

Draft illustration for an art class project. The intention is for a series of images to collectively evoke an emotion, in this case 'regret'. I'll have each of the elements in the sketch on a separate layer of acetate, probably made with a mix of ink and collage - then the layers will be glued into picture frames that will be sandwiched together.

Portrait sketch: orange and blue

An imaginary face drawn in photoshop using a drawing tablet. It is amazing how responsive the tablet is, and with some practice it is very similar to drawing on paper - with the added benefit that I can edit what I've drawn immediately, retract my steps if I don't like what I've done, or re-colour it completely...

Portrait sketch detail

Detail of a photoshop sketch done using a drawing tablet. At the moment I'm drawn to a combination of light and heavy linework with areas of blocked-in colour alongside blank space.

Sketch variation

I like this variation. Good use of closure my art teacher would say...

Sketch with Pattern

I'd like the faces to be framed by patterns - they will take ages to cut out of lino, but I think it will be worth it.

Penitent Men: planning sketch

Planning sketches in photoshop; this way I can play with colour and concept quite quickly

Test Sketch

Another Photoshop Sketch. I'm thinking of using these as the basis for further lino prints in my Penitent Men series. Although this one doesn't look too penitent.

Sketching Faces

I'm busy learning how to use my drawing tablet in Photoshop. This sketch is based on Head of a Negro (1778); an oil painting by John Singleton Copley.

Postcard Brief - Back

And this is the back of the postcard. We had to use a self-portrait, and so this is the one that is recognisable. I used my pen tablet in Photoshop to do a sketch over the top of a photograph.

Postcard Brief - Front

This is the front of the postcard we had to design for art class. I've used a vector background that I did in Inkscape and then collaged a bunch of new stuff over the top. The coloured background is a photograph taken of food drawings we did.

Penitent Men (2)

This was the second Penitent Man print that I did using the big roller at art class. I need to get one. A pity they cost thousands and weigh a tonne.

Penitent Men (1)

First in a series of lino prints I'm working on. I printed these at art class. My idea is for a series of Penitent Men, about 12 in total.

Another stick drawing

This ink-stick drawing follows on from the other two. The idea was to do another drawing that combined the head and the skull. My head turned out well, and I wasn't that keen on drawing over the top of it. But the result is interesting. Each drawing is about 1 x 1.5m in size.

Drawing with sticks

These were done in art class using long sticks. The concept is to make drawing unfamiliar, so you look harder at the subject...or something. These are bad photos - I really need to get a decent digital camera.

IF - Instinct

Vector illustration for IF's theme of 'instinct'.

Lino Prints - Shed

2-colour lino print

This is a bad photo of a print I did in late 2008. The actual print size escapes me as all the proofs are packed away; I think it was bigger than 6 x 4 inches.

Line drawing - gesture

I started art classes this month which should help increase my output. We did rapid gesture drawings last week. I've tried this before and always get bogged down in detail. This is probably the first time I've got it halfway right.

Software manual illustration

An illustration I did for (possible) inclusion in an accounting software manual. I used the freeware vector graphic program Inkscape.
